Yield: 10-12 servings

Ingredients

1 (9-inch) round cake
2 cups buttercream frosting
Blue food coloring
1 black licorice whip, cut into 8 pieces
2 black jelly beans
Pastry bag and writing tip
Buttercream Frosting:
6 cups powdered sugar, divided
3/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
6-8 tablespoons milk, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Place cake on serving plate. Reserve 1/2 cup frosting; tint remaining 1 1/2 cups frosting with blue food coloring. Frost cake with blue frosting.

Using writing tip and white frosting, pipe 4 concentric circles, about 1 inch apart, and dot in the center of cake. Draw tip of knife through circles at regular intervals, alternating direction each time. Place jelly beans for spider's body and head on cake. Place licorice pieces as spider legs.

Buttercream Frosting:
Combine 3 cups powdered sugar, butter, shortening, 4 tablespoons milk and vanilla in bowl. Beat until smooth. Add remaining powdered sugar; beat until light and fluffy, adding more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed for good spreading consistency.
