drink your greens - Fresh Dish Post from Price Chopper

drink your greens

January 8th 2015

Start your mornings, and your New Year, out on a healthy note with breakfast smoothies! Smoothies are a great way to start your day off with multiple servings of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. They are also endlessly customizable – with just a few ingredients, you can have a different one each morning of the week.

To start, try a Pineapple Banana Smoothie. It may be green, but the pineapple and banana flavors shine through.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup milk or almond milk
  • 1 cup packed chopped kale
  • 1/2 cup diced pineapple
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 medium banana

Simply combine all ingredients in your blender, and you have a breakfast ready to take on the go! For an extra cold treat, you can either use frozen pineapple or cut and freeze bananas in advance to give your smoothie a creamy, milkshake-like texture.

You can easily swap out a few of these ingredients for a completely different taste. Try using less milk and more yogurt for a creamier, protein-rich drink. Or use frozen mixed berries and spinach instead of kale and pineapple – the berries will mask the spinach if you’re put off by the green color.

For an extra protein boost, you can add liquid egg whites or a scoop of protein powder. Or need more fiber in your diet? Add a spoonful of nut butter or flax seeds.

Tell us on Facebook – what’s your favorite smoothie combination?
